Radiation Table Causing Back Pain

My mother had her first radiation treatment for breast cancer today. The metal table she had to lay on causd her a tremendous amount of pain. She has osteoporosis and has multiple back fractures. She needs assistance laying down and getting off the table- and it is not because she is elderly. I am wondering if all radiation tables are like this one? Has anyone had the same experience? She can’t possibly go through 6 1/2 weeks (every day) of this. I am concerned that while the radiation therapy is necessary for her cancer treatment it may cause irreputable damage.

Hello there,

I had a very difficult time on the radiation table, too. (I was hit by a car in my teens and have a very bad upper back and shoulder because of it.) After much complaining, they finally gave me a cushion to lay upon on the radiation table. It was about an inch to an inch and a half thick, but it made a tremendous difference! I think it’d be good to ask if your mom’s radiation team has something similar she could use. (It was about the size of a yoga mat.)

I hope this helps a bit,

Danean

P.S. I’m so sorry your mom has to go through this fight. God bless you for being there for her!
